You can see the Marble Mountains perfectly well on your own: a Grab from central Da Nang, a ticket at the gate and the signposted paths on Thuy Son are all it takes. What you give up is the order of the caves, the timing for the light in Huyen Khong, and anyone to explain what the shrines and inscriptions mean.
A private guide adds those three things and joins the Marble Mountains to Son Tra and Hoi An in one car. A small-group tour adds a guide shared with up to around 18 people, a fixed timetable and often a marble showroom stop.
What a guide adds, and nothing you do not want
Our licensed local guides handle the route, the timing and the story, and there is no shop stop at the end.

When is going on your own the right call?
Go on your own if you are comfortable reading signs and a map, only want the Marble Mountains that day, and can arrive early. Use the route in the Marble Mountains itinerary, save Huyen Khong for about 10:00, and you will see the best of the hill.
It is also the right call on a tight budget. Tickets and two Grab rides cost less than any tour.
What does a private guide actually add?
First, context. The caves on Thuy Son are working shrines, full of statues, altars and inscriptions in Chinese characters that mean nothing without someone to read them. A guide turns them into a story: the emperors who named the hills, the monks who lived in the caves, the wartime history of Huyen Khong, and the craft of the carvers below.
Second, timing and order. The hill has two gates, one elevator and a loop that works well one way round and badly the other. Third, the day around it: the Lady Buddha on Son Tra before the crowds, a carving yard instead of a showroom, and Hoi An in the afternoon if you want it.
Why not simply join a small-group tour?
Small-group tours are the cheapest way to get a guide and transport, and for many travellers that is enough. The trade-offs are the size of the group, a timetable that often puts you on the hill when the coach groups are there, a string of hotel pickups at each end, and in many cases a stop at a marble showroom that reviews regularly complain about.

Do you need a guide for the Marble Mountains?
No. The paths on Thuy Son are signposted and the site is easy to visit alone. A guide adds the explanation of the shrines and inscriptions and the timing for the light in Huyen Khong.
Are there guides for hire at the Marble Mountains?
Local guides sometimes offer their services near the gates. Quality and English vary, and agreeing the price and length before you start avoids misunderstandings.
Is a small-group tour of the Marble Mountains worth it?
It is the cheapest way to get transport and a guide. Expect a shared group of up to around 18, a fixed timetable, and often a marble showroom stop.
What does a private Marble Mountains tour include?
Ours include hotel pickup, a private car, a licensed local guide who speaks fluent English, every entrance ticket including the elevator and Am Phu cave, and water, with no shop stops.
