Real Marble, Stone Powder Or Resin: Telling Them Apart In The Shop

Real marble is heavy, cool to the touch, and has veins and colour changes that run through the stone and never repeat exactly. Resin figures and cast stone, made from crushed stone powder bound with resin and poured into moulds, are lighter, feel closer to room temperature, and come in identical copies with a uniform grain.

Five quick checks in a shop will usually tell them apart: weight, temperature, veining, identical copies, and the underside. None needs tools or damages the piece.

What is the difference between marble, cast stone and resin?

MaterialWhat it isHow it is made
MarbleA natural stone, cut from a quarryCarved from a solid block
Cast stone or stone powderCrushed marble or stone mixed with resin or cementPoured into a mould, then finished
ResinA plastic, sometimes with a stone-like finishCast in a mould and painted or coated

Cast pieces are not fake in themselves; they are a cheaper material, and honest sellers call them what they are. The problem is only when they are sold as carved marble at a marble price.

Five checks you can do in the shop

1 · Weight

Lift it, with permission. Marble is dense; a solid marble figure feels surprisingly heavy for its size. Resin is noticeably light, and cast stone sits in between.

2 · Temperature

Rest the back of your hand on it. Marble draws heat from your skin and feels cool, even in a warm shop. Resin feels closer to room temperature.

3 · Veins and colour

Look for veins, specks and colour changes that run naturally and continue around edges and into recesses. Cast material tends to have an even, uniform grain, or a pattern that looks painted on the surface.

4 · Identical copies

Look along the shelf. Carved pieces vary slightly in every detail, even when made to the same design. A row of figures identical down to the smallest crease points to a mould.

5 · The underside

Turn it over, or ask to see the base. Look for mould seams, bubbles, a hollow interior or a different material underneath. Solid carved stone looks the same all the way through.

What should the price tell you?

A large figure offered at a small price is almost never solid carved marble; the stone and the hours of carving alone cost more. Ask directly what the material is, and whether the piece is carved or cast, and be wary of a vague answer. How the carving is done is shown in how a marble statue is made, and how to compare shops in buying marble in Da Nang.

Honest noteNone of these checks is laboratory proof, and a well-made cast piece with a stone filler can fool a first look. They are good enough to avoid paying marble prices for resin, which is the mistake that matters, but not to certify a valuable piece.

Real marble vs resin: quick answers

How can you tell if a statue is real marble?

Real marble is heavy, cool to the touch and has natural veins that run through the stone. Identical copies, light weight and mould seams point to cast material or resin.

Is cast stone the same as marble?

No. Cast stone is crushed stone bound with resin or cement and poured into a mould. It can look similar but is a cheaper material and should be priced as such.

Are all statues in Non Nuoc real marble?

No. Many are carved from natural stone, but some shops also sell cast and resin pieces. Ask what each piece is made of before you buy.

Does real marble feel cold?

Yes. Marble conducts heat away from your skin and feels cool even in a warm room, while resin feels closer to room temperature.
