The Lady Buddha of Da Nang is a 67-metre white statue of Quan The Am, the bodhisattva of compassion, standing on a lotus base 35 metres across at Linh Ung pagoda on the Son Tra peninsula. It faces the sea, and on clear days it can be seen from far along the coast.
The pagoda was built between 2004 and 2010 on the site of an older shrine, is open daily from about 6:00 to 21:00, and charges no entry fee. It is about 10 km from central Da Nang, and it is a different pagoda from Linh Ung on the Marble Mountains.
The Lady Buddha before the crowds

The statue represents Quan The Am, known elsewhere as Guanyin or Avalokitesvara, in the form called Quan The Am of the Southern Sea: facing the water, holding a vase of sacred water, protecting the fishermen and the city behind her. At 67 metres, about the height of a thirty-storey building, it is described as the tallest statue of its kind in Vietnam.
Inside, the statue holds 17 floors, each with altars and Buddha images, 21 in all. The pagoda around it covers about 20 hectares on the mountainside, with a main hall, a garden of 18 arhat statues and terraces over the bay.
What is there to see at Linh Ung pagoda on Son Tra?
| Sight | What it is |
|---|---|
| The Lady Buddha | The 67-metre statue on its lotus base, facing the sea |
| The main hall | Bronze statues of the Buddha Shakyamuni with Quan Am and Ksitigarbha |
| The arhat garden | Eighteen carved figures of the Buddha’s enlightened disciples, each with a different expression |
| The terraces | Views over My Khe beach, the city and, on clear days, Cu Lao Cham island |
Dress as for any pagoda: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off in the halls. The pagoda dress code guide covers the details.
How is it different from Linh Ung on the Marble Mountains?
Da Nang has three pagodas named Linh Ung. The one on Thuy Son in the Marble Mountains is the oldest, with roots in the 17th century; the one on Son Tra, home of the Lady Buddha, is the newest and the largest; the third is on Ba Na Hills. The Marble Mountains pagoda is described in Linh Ung pagoda and the Xa Loi tower.
When should you go, and how long do you need?
Early morning is best: the light is soft on the statue’s face, the terraces are cooler, and the coach groups have not yet arrived. Allow 40 minutes to an hour. Monkeys are often seen around the pagoda grounds; do not feed them, and keep food and loose bags out of reach.
The pagoda sits on the coast road on the south side of the peninsula, below the forest routes of Son Tra. The complete Marble Mountain guide covers the other half of the morning.
