A Marble Mountains Itinerary: The Route Through Thuy Son, Stop By Stop

The best Marble Mountains itinerary covers Thuy Son in one loop without doubling back: Am Phu cave and the elevator at Gate 2, Linh Ung pagoda and Tang Chon cave, the Vong Hai viewpoint, Van Thong cave, Tam Thai pagoda, then Hoa Nghiem and Huyen Khong caves, and down the 156 steps to Gate 1. Allow two and a half to three hours.

Time it so you reach Huyen Khong between about 9:00 and 11:00, when sunlight falls through its roof on sunny days. Without the elevator, walk the same loop in reverse from Gate 1.

Which gate should you start from?

Thuy Son has two gates on Huyen Tran Cong Chua, and the choice decides your route. Gate 2 has the elevator, which replaces the 108-step east stairway to Linh Ung pagoda, and Am Phu cave sits right beside it. Gate 1 has no elevator: 156 stone steps lead straight up to Tam Thai pagoda and the path to Huyen Khong.

Start at Gate 2 if anyone in your group wants to save a climb, and at Gate 1 if you want the quickest way to Huyen Khong. Both gates sell tickets; the tickets and opening hours explain what each one covers, and getting to the Marble Mountains covers the ride there.

Route A: with the elevator, from Gate 2

This is the easier route and the one we use most. It starts low, rides up, and finishes by walking down the western stairway, so you only climb the steps between sights.

StopWhat you seeAllow
1 · Am Phu cave (Gate 2)The underworld cave at the foot of the hill, separate ticket30 min
2 · Elevator upFrom Gate 2 to the terrace by the Xa Loi tower5 min
3 · Xa Loi towerThe seven-storey relic tower and the Buddha in the deer garden10 min
4 · Linh Ung pagodaDown a flight of steps: the sea-facing pagoda and its white seated Buddha15 min
5 · Tang Chon caveBehind the pagoda; quiet shrines and 20 rock inscriptions15 min
6 · Vong Hai viewpointLeft at the crossroads above the pagoda; view east over Non Nuoc beach10 min
7 · Van Thong caveOn the path towards Tam Thai; the chimney climb is optional20 min
8 · Tam Thai pagodaThe pagoda on the western side of the hill, above the Gate 1 stairway10 min
9 · Hoa Nghiem and Huyen KhongThrough Hoa Nghiem into the great hall of Huyen Khong30 to 40 min
10 · Vong Giang viewpointNear Tam Thai; view inland over the river and the other hills10 min
11 · Down to Gate 1156 stone steps to the road10 min

Starting at Am Phu at 8:00 puts you in Huyen Khong at around 10:00, inside the window for the light. On a cloudy day, the order still works and the cave is still worth it.

Route B: stairs only, from Gate 1

Without the elevator, walk the loop the other way round. From Gate 1, climb the 156 steps to Tam Thai pagoda, take in the Vong Giang viewpoint, then Hoa Nghiem and Huyen Khong. From there continue past Van Thong cave to the Vong Hai viewpoint, the Xa Loi tower, Linh Ung pagoda and Tang Chon cave, and walk down the 108 east steps to Gate 2 and Am Phu cave.

On this route Huyen Khong comes early, so arrive at about 8:30 rather than 7:30 if the light matters to you. It is harder work than Route A, because you climb the 156 steps instead of walking down them.

What can you skip if you are short of time?

With one hour, go in at Gate 1, climb to Tam Thai, see Huyen Khong, and come back down the same steps. With two hours, add Linh Ung pagoda and Tang Chon cave. Am Phu, Van Thong and the two viewpoints are the stops to drop first.

The Heaven Gate and Thuong Thai summit, reached by steep steps behind Tam Thai pagoda, are a detour for keen climbers only: steep, uneven steps for a view similar to the one from the viewpoints on the main loop.

What should you bring for the route?

Shoes with grip, because the marble steps are worn smooth and the cave floors are uneven. Water, because there is little shade on the stairways. Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the pagodas, and something easy to slip off at the shrines; the pagoda dress code guide covers the details.

Honest noteThe loop is well signposted and many visitors walk it on their own without trouble. What is easy to get wrong is the order and the hour: arrive at 10:30 by Gate 2 and you reach Huyen Khong after the light has gone and with the coach groups. The route is simple; the timing is the part that needs planning.

Marble Mountains itinerary: quick answers

How long does it take to see the Marble Mountains?

Allow two to two and a half hours for the main loop on Thuy Son, plus 30 minutes for Am Phu cave. With one hour you can still see Tam Thai pagoda and Huyen Khong cave from Gate 1.

Should I start at Gate 1 or Gate 2?

Start at Gate 2 to use the elevator and see Am Phu cave first; start at Gate 1 for the quickest climb to Huyen Khong cave. Both gates are on Huyen Tran Cong Chua and both sell tickets.

What order should I see the caves in?

Tang Chon first, next to Linh Ung pagoda, then Van Thong on the way across the hill, and Hoa Nghiem and Huyen Khong last. Keeping Huyen Khong for between 9:00 and 11:00 gives you the best chance of seeing its light.

Can you do the Marble Mountains without climbing stairs?

Not fully. The elevator saves the 108-step east stairway, but the caves and viewpoints are all reached by steps. A limited visit to the terrace, the Xa Loi tower and Linh Ung pagoda involves the fewest stairs.
