Tang Chon is a small cave behind Linh Ung pagoda on Thuy Son, shaped like a narrow valley about 10 metres long and 7 wide, and open to the sky through a gap in the rock. Hoa Nghiem is the small cave you pass through just before Huyen Khong, with a statue of Quan Am, the bodhisattva of compassion.
Both are included in the main Marble Mountains ticket, each takes 10 to 15 minutes, and together they hold 40 of the 78 carved inscriptions recognised by UNESCO. Most visitors hurry past them; they are among the quietest places on the hill.

Tang Chon lies directly behind Linh Ung pagoda, its name carved above the entrance. The name means a place that holds the whole truth. Inside, the cave opens like a small valley, lit from above through Thien Long Coc, a gap in the rock, and divided into several chambers with altars to the Buddha and to figures from older traditions.
In one corner a passage leads to a cooler hollow known as the wind cave, where air moves through openings to the top of the hill. The cave has been a place of worship for centuries, and a hermitage built in front of it was the origin of Linh Ung pagoda.
What is inside Hoa Nghiem cave?
Hoa Nghiem is the antechamber of Huyen Khong. You enter it through the stone gate beside Tam Thai pagoda, and it holds a statue of Quan Am holding a vase of sacred water, with a statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni to one side. On the wall is an old stone stele dated 1640, recording the donors who supported the shrine.
From Hoa Nghiem, about twenty steps lead down into Huyen Khong cave, so you cannot miss it, only rush it.
Why are the inscriptions here important?
The cliffs and caves of the Marble Mountains carry 78 texts carved in Chinese characters and Vietnamese Nom script, from the seventeenth century to the twentieth, and in 2022 they were added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World register for Asia and the Pacific. Tang Chon and Hoa Nghiem hold the largest groups, 20 each: poems, dedications and records by emperors, officials and monks.
They are carved into the rock rather than posted on signs, and without translation most visitors cannot tell a dedication from a poem. That is where a guide makes the biggest difference.
Where do they fit in a visit?
Tang Chon comes early on the loop if you start with the elevator: from the Xa Loi tower, down the steps to Linh Ung pagoda and round the back. Hoa Nghiem comes with Huyen Khong on the western side. The full order is in the Marble Mountains itinerary, and the other caves are compared in the caves of the Marble Mountains.
