The Caves Of The Marble Mountains, And Which Ones Are Worth The Climb

Thuy Son, the Marble Mountain you can climb, has six caves worth knowing: Huyen Khong, the largest and the one lit by sunbeams; Am Phu, the underworld cave at the foot of the hill; Van Thong, a rock chimney you climb; Tang Chon, behind Linh Ung pagoda; Hoa Nghiem, the small cave you pass on the way to Huyen Khong; and quiet Linh Nham.

If you see only one, make it Huyen Khong. With two to three hours you can see all six. Unlike show caves elsewhere, these have almost no stalactites: they are open, airy shrines, many with openings to the sky.

Why do these caves look different from other caves?

The caves of the Marble Mountains sit high in isolated marble and limestone hills, and most have openings in their roofs. That makes them dry, bright and well ventilated, with flat floors and almost none of the hanging stalactites found in the limestone caves of northern Vietnam.

They have also been places of worship for centuries. Monks lived and prayed in them, emperors visited them, and their walls carry altars, statues and carved inscriptions. A visit is closer to walking through a series of chapels cut into the rock than to a geology tour.

Huyen Khong: the one to plan around

Huyen Khong is a round, bell-shaped hall about 16 metres high, with five openings in its roof. On sunny mornings, roughly between 9:00 and 11:00, shafts of light fall across a stone Buddha carved in 1960 by a Non Nuoc master. It is the image most people have of the Marble Mountains, and the reason to time your visit.

Am Phu: the underworld at the foot of the hill

Am Phu is the second-largest cave in Thuy Son and the most theatrical. You cross a bridge over a symbolic river of the dead into a cave laid out as the Buddhist underworld, with scenes of judgement carved by Non Nuoc stonemasons, then climb towards daylight on a path representing the way to heaven. It has a separate ticket at 20,000 VND (~$1).

Tang Chon, Van Thong, Hoa Nghiem and Linh Nham

Tang Chon, behind Linh Ung pagoda, is a small valley-like cave about ten metres long, open to the sky through a gap in the rock and carrying 20 of the hill’s carved inscriptions. Van Thong is a narrow chimney that climbs about 40 metres from its mouth to a hole in the sky. Hoa Nghiem, the small shrine you pass through before Huyen Khong, holds a statue of Quan Am and an old stone stele. Linh Nham, near Tam Thai pagoda, is small and usually quiet.

The cliffs and caves of the hill carry 78 carved inscriptions recognised by UNESCO; the largest groups are in Tang Chon and Hoa Nghiem. The complete Marble Mountain guide covers the rest of the hill.

Honest noteIf you are hoping for a vast show cave with coloured lighting and dripping formations, the Marble Mountains will feel small. Their caves are modest in size; what makes them special is the light, the shrines and the history, which reward a slow visit rather than a quick one.
